The Bar Association of Erie County was chartered on June 17, 1887, "to cultivate the science of jurisprudence; to promote reform in the law; to facilitate the administration of justice; to elevate the standard of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession and to cherish the spirit of brotherhood among the members thereof."
Today, the BAEC offers a wide variety of services to its 3,700 members including:
- Committees dealing with substantive law, the courts and programs which allow attorneys to actively participate in special projects, share information and resources and make recommendations to the Association's Board of Directors.
- Continuing legal education programs to inform and update members on a wide-range of legal topics presented in a variety of formats for your convenience. As a member of the Association you will receive significant discounts on CLE courses.
- Through our monthly publication, The Bulletin, members receive a regular menu of information and stay connected to the legal community.
- Members benefit from our comprehensive, economical group insurance rates. The offerings include several health insurance options, professional liability insurance, disability insurance and many other coverages.
- Recognition and awards such as Lawyer of the Year, Outstanding Jurist and the Special Service Award.
- Information and guidance about professional standards and conduct from the Professional Ethics Committee who strive to promote the highest possible standards of professional conduct for the legal profession.
- Mailing services to assist members in sending professional announcements and information to the legal community.
- Professional guidance and support from the Lawyers Helping Lawyers Committee which is a very special group of lawyers who devote their time and energy to helping colleagues who may be suffering from substance abuse problems. All inquiries and referrals are made in confidence through the Executive Director.
