Request for Qualifications

The Town of Amherst is requesting proposals from qualified individuals and firms to provide Litigation/Defense Counsel Services. Using this Request for Qualifications (RFQ), the Town intends to establish a pool of attorneys who will be available to provide legal services as needed during the contract term. One or more individual/firms may be selected to provide services. If selected, a retainer agreement will be offered at a compensation rate set by the Town Board.

The Law Department of the Town is seeking litigation and defense counsel services as it is frequently called upon to provide outside counsel for the defense and representation of Town officials/officers/directors and employees. The subject matter of such litigation includes tort and other insurable claims against the Town. Counsel will have a close working relationship with the Town’s Law Department.

Senior Legal Counsel - Litigation

This position, located in Buffalo, NY and reporting to the EVP and General Counsel for Litigation in NYC, provides legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure that the company’s exposure to legal risk is managed. The position will manage a docket of lawsuits and claims involving the company, overseeing outside counsel in the defense (and, occasionally, prosecution) of claims involving the company. Will advise on reserves in connection with docket of matters. Will be responsible for root cause analysis and reporting on a docket of cases, and providing advice to clients on mitigation of litigation risk. In addition, this position will have a role in connection with the management of e-discovery, legal holds, and similar complex discovery, at the direction of the SVP and Associate General Counsel overseeing such activities.

Requirements:
Minimum of eight years proven and progressive corporate legal experience, or equivalent
Minimum of a Juris Doctorate degree as well as admission to applicable state Bar and pertinent levels of courts in applicable states
Strong advocacy, negotiation, interpersonal, organizational, legal research and verbal and written communication skills
Ability to quickly apply abstract concepts of law and make quick, innovative decisions to resolve problems
Ability to defend the Company and Group affiliates from claims and advocate their interests while maintaining their reputation for honesty and integrity
Proficiency with personal computers as well as pertinent mainframe systems and software packages
