On Thursday, May 21, 2020 the Erie Law Institute will conduct a Gathering of lawyers with the New York State Bar Association’s Senior Lawyer Section. As the name suggests, Finding the Right Lawyer to Take Over Your Practice, is a program to help senior lawyers interesting in moving away from full-time law practice meet with younger lawyers who may be looking to grow their own business.
Dennis J. Bischof from Williamsville, NY. is working with C. Bruce Lawrence, former chair of NYSBA’s Senior Lawyer Section to bring this informal meeting to the bar center. C. Bruce Lawrence reported that the first Gathering held with the Monroe County Bar Association brought together 30-senior lawyers with a smaller number of young lawyers. Bruce added that, “One of our biggest challenges will be in convincing younger lawyers, who may be gainfully employed as associates in larger firms, to come out to see how senior lawyers are preparing to wind-down their business.”
Aging is not just about people fifty and older. It affects people of all generations, so all lawyers need to get involved to shaping the changes that will affect us all.
When I began to examine the scope and scale of aging as a lawyer, I realized that we have to rethink everything – how we live, work, and play, and especially how we organize our family and community life: how we take care of each other across generations.
The legal profession needs to come together in new ways, because I see the elder boom as an opportunity for the entire community of lawyers to work together to allow seniors to be able to age with dignity, independence, and self-determination.
